Tuskegee Airmen Mural Project

Rantoul, Illinois 61866

The HOYCE Center and Community Partners Launch Tuskegee Airmen Mural Project to Honor Legacy, Educate Youth, and Foster Community Healing

Rantoul, Illinois — The HOYCE Center, in collaboration with 718 Real Estate, The Village of Rantoul, The Carter Education & Community Foundation, Inc, Experience CU, 40 North Champaign County Arts Council,  Champaign County African American Heritage Trail, and local partners including DREAAM and Oesfreelancing Graphic Design, is proud to announce the launch of the Tuskegee Airmen Mural Project, a community-driven public art and education initiative honoring the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces.

The mural will be located along Veterans Parkway at the former Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, a site deeply connected to military history and local heritage. The placement intentionally reflects the historical significance of Chanute Air Force Base and its connection to the Tuskegee Airmen.

This initiative is designed to preserve local and national Black history, uplift community pride, and engage youth in meaningful learning through art, storytelling, and historical reflection. By combining creative expression with education, the initiative aims to foster healing, intergenerational connection, and a deeper understanding of resilience, service, and equity.

Art, History, and Education Intersect

Through the Tuskegee Airmen Mural Project, youth and community will engage in a guided educational experience that explores:

  • The historical significance of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II

  • The broader context of segregation, service, and civil rights

  • The enduring lessons of courage, excellence, and perseverance

Professional artists will work to translate the history into a visual story, culminating in a large-scale public mural that honors the Tuskegee Airmen’s legacy and inspires future generations.

A Collaborative Community Effort

The project will be possible through partnerships with community-based organizations, local leaders, community members, artists, historians, and veteran-focused groups, and residents committed to preserving and elevating Black History in Rantoul.

“This project is about more than creating a mural,” said Dr. Jennea B. Klingenberg, Founder and Executive Director of The HOYCE Center. “It’s about honoring history, empowering youth, and creating a space for reflection, pride, and healing within our community. The Chanute Air Force Base has a rich history in the Rantoul community, which includes the Tuskegee Airman.”

“Public art has the power to educate, unite, and heal, “ said Mayor Sam Hall of Rantoul. “The Tuskegee Airmen Mural Project honors resilience in the face of adversity and reminds us that progress comes through courage and community. I am proud that Rantoul continues to lead in preserving history while building a stronger future together.”

Public Installation and Community Engagement

Upon completion, the mural will serve as a permanent educational and cultural landmark along Veterans Parkway. The project will also align with America’s 250th Birthday Celebration initiatives.

Planned engagement activities include:

  • A public unveiling ceremony in Summer 2026

  • Community learning opportunities connected to local Black history

  • Ongoing educational use by schools and community groups

The mural will stand as a lasting tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen while reinforcing the importance of preserving history through accessible, community-centered storytelling. In a location visible to youth and that will encourage youth engagement, community dialogue, and continued reflection on the enduring impact of the Tuskegee Airman.
